New to BDSM – Types of Rope Bondage Materials

Rope bondage is a great way to experience BDSM and bondage. If you want to start getting into BDSM play, it is a must for you to acquire some rope to go into your dungeon (well, maybe at this point it is not a dungeon but a box wink*) There are several types of ropes and materials you can get, so let’s take a look at the different materials that are out there.

Cotton ropes are probably the most common type of rope used for players all over the world. If you are thinking they should be incredibly comfortable considering most of your clothes are probably made out of this material, you are completely right. They feel very comfortable and soft on the skin, so there won’t be any complaints there from your partner. On the negative side of things, this type of rope doesn’t really work for suspension bondage because it can stretch too much; that is why you should never use them for suspension. The other thing about cotton ropes is they are not very good at holding knots either, so if you want to create a very intricate and tight knot, this won’t be possible. Oh and they also hold a lot of moisture, so they are very prone to germs and bacteria.

Hemp ropes are the traditional way to do rope bondage. This rope is very strong, last a long time and also has the benefit of looking very pretty and visually appealing. However, a lot of people don’t like this material a great deal because they feel it scratches the skin or it simply feels too uncomfortable for them; besides, they also tend to be quite hard to untie, so it’s not the easiest rope to manage out there. The good thing is the material actually softens a little bit after you have washed it a few times, so you will need to try it and see if after washing it, the materials felt better on the skin. By the way you should also never use hemp rope on suspension bondage either.

Silk ropes feel amazing on the skin; they are super smooth, soft and simply feel lovely and nice. This makes them very comfortable; silk also has the added benefit of not having friction. Because these types of ropes are so comfy and easy to manage, they are probably the perfect rope for those beginners in the art of rope bondage. If you want to get into Japanese bondage, silk rope is also the best rope you can use as well.

The best two things about silicone ropes are: they are very, very flexible and they are also very smooth and soft. Silicone ropes can be stretched a great deal but they are still restrictive enough so your partner won’t be able to get out that easily. A good thing about these ropes is they are non-porous, so in other words: they are not prone to bacteria and germs. Oh, and I should also mention they warm up to the temperature of the body, which is very nice. The bad thing about silicone ropes is some people can find them too stretchy for some types of bondage; besides, they can also pinch the skin or cause some uncomfortable sensations when you tie the knots.

And lastly we have ropes created out of synthetic materials. There are several types of ropes that fall into this category, but they tend to be smooth and strong. The downside is some of them, like plastic ropes, are not flexible so you will have a very hard time tying knots. Another thing to keep in mind is you are more likely to have rope burns with synthetic materials.
