Rope Bondage Style Guide

Thankfully for us, there are several styles and methods one can practice rope bondage (can I get a hurrah?). The basis of rope bondage is, well, tying people up with rope, but is not that simple as it sounds. There’s actually numerous ways one can practice it because of the different methods and styles:

  • Shibari: Also called: Japanese Bondage. This is definitely the most beautiful of all the different bondage styles (at least in my opinion wink*) because is incredibly artistic, kind of like performance art. It was originated in Japan, it has been around for a vey long time and draws inspiration from ancient patterns. The thing with Shibari is not just tying the rope in a particular way, but feeling free with the ropes, looking aesthetically attractive…and the way those knots create pressure on certain areas. Yes, you heard read that one right, this form of bondage highlights the areas the rope is applied in order to create more arousal. The idea is for the master to add layers of rope and create knots in all the erogenous zones. Often, there will be harnesses involved and crossed limbs; it does require patience, time and skill, but it is worth the experience.
  • Western: This is also known as American Bondage. You want to thank Klaw and Willie for this type of bondage because they are considered the creators of it. “And what does it entail” Well, an incredibly stylized look. It includes tight corsets and high heels; the image as a whole has more meaning that the actual bondage itself. It actually uses rope bondage as way of making the woman look more defined and to transform the body, just like a corset would. It has a clear influence of those pin up vintage girls; is tends to be symmetrical, limbs are tied together and there are no elaborate rope harness. Sometimes, leather gloves are used, as well as chains and cuffs to go with the heels and general attire. For example, usually the wrists and elbows are tied behind so the breasts can thrust forward… allowing visuals and easy access, wink*.
  • Suspension bondage: Although technically not a style, I will talk about this a little bit. The norm is to begin with partial suspension and then move on to total suspension; it can be western or Japanese style (usually most people go with Shibari because of the visuals). The person being tied up or bottom, will feel like they are floating while being completely restrained and well, helpless. Suspension does take a lot of time, experience and practice, you are hanging someone up in the air after all, so only experienced people practice it.
  • Sex Bondage: This is an easy one. It literally means just tying someone in a position that allows oral and/or vaginal sex. It can be any style you like; the only norm is the sexual organs should be ready to access. The bondage and position will have to be tight enough so they can’t release but loose enough that they can hold that position for some time. Remember, you will be playing with them wink*.
  • Speed Bondage: Also an easy one, as the name says you will have to tie someone up fast. Usually is performed in role-play or kidnapping fantasies; situations that, if they’d happen in real life, would call for really tight bondage. Basically is done fast, so it should be tight and messy. It’s actually extremely tricky to perform because you have to be fast while still being safe, and all of this happens with the bottom acting as the victim and struggling. So, yeah, there are a few number of things involved in it.
