Sexuality was a fascinating subject for many cultures around the world and it was the source of several sexual rituals. Every civilization understood sexuality differently and developed their own practices according to their perspective on it. Historic rituals might seem bizarre compared to the ones we know and practice nowadays, but they are even more interesting and exciting than these. And each ritual holds a piece of sexual culture from its country which developed along the years into the vast sexuality that we get to appreciate now, worldwide.

In the Hawaiian culture for instance, everyone used to have public names for their intimate parts and this was a normal thing. They even had genital chants to celebrate future generations and sexual encounters and they used to spoil their intimate areas in such a way for many years. Of course the Royal ones used to have more developed names than others but all over Hawaii, genitals were as important as another human being! In New Guinea, more specific in the tribe called Sambian, part of growing up for men included keeping them away from any women and having them swallow semen from their warriors and leaders. This used to be a ritual that transformed boys into men and prepared them for the couple life that they were intending to have. In ancient Greece, homosexuality was considered a form of power and it was mostly practiced between older gentlemen and younger men. It was not only socially accepted but a way to determine who is the superior man in a group and a way to establish a certain social hierarchy. If two men of close age would engage in sexual practices and became a homosexual couple, the one who was a passive homosexual was considered inferior and not only as a man but also on the social scale. Since we are at the homosexuality aspect of sexual encounters and same-sex marriages, an interesting fact is that in ancient Egypt, there was a tribe named Siwa that considered this to be the norm. Inside the tribe, if men didn’t act in a homosexual manner or if they were not attached to another man they were considered to be outcasts and they were not treated the same like other men. Basically, only homosexual men were treated as real men in some tribes of ancient Egypt. Another interesting ritual was established by the Christian church. In Christianity, the only position admitted as being valid when it comes to sex used to be the missionary position. This happened in Middle Ages when anal sex or any other position that involved the man sitting behind his women were considered shameful and not encouraged at all. Luckily, this changed and nowadays we can indulge in all kinds of sexual scenes!

Most likely they wouldn’t understand the hitting up on a good-looking girl in a bar by buying her a drink because they come from a different world. But after all this is the whole charm of sexual evolution! No matter the culture or the country that we refer to, most often than not sexuality was strongly connected with religion and social status and it was very hard to fit human nature into these two areas. People always had personal pleasures and sexual preferences that didn’t match the religious or social beliefs and it was just a matter of luck to get the chance to live them in the open or not.
