Best Safety Practices for BDSM Pet & Pony Play

Pet play is one of the greatest things about BDSM. However, as basically every other fun practice, you will always need to look into some safety measures in order for your play to be smooth and both you and your partner can continue to enjoy many more years of it.

You will need to ensure your pet is in the right mindset. As you know, the mind is incredibly powerful and half of the pet play comes from there, so you need to check in often. Your pet can get too much into the role and cease to think clearly for instance or they can slip into the role when it’s not an appropriate time. As the dominant/trainer, it’s your duty to make sure this doesn’t happen and to always keep them in check. Instruct clearly when the play has begun and when it ends, it will help the brain difference when it’s play/fantasy time and when it’s time for real life.

Another thing to keep in mind (and a discussion to be had!) is what the pet is looking for, what they want to do, etc. and those same questions will be asked to the trainer. Just like a regular BDSM partnership, you two will need to discuss beforehand the expectations, limits, fears and anything that comes to mind. Do you want your pet to be roaming around the house without you being on their toes? Does the pet want its owner full attention all the time? Do they want to play? Will they use a toilet or litter box?... You will also want to come up with a sign for your pet to let you know they want to stop being a pet and the play is done for the day. It can be something as simple as tugging at something, bringing over a shoe, or nibble your legs or hands, you will come up with something, I’m sure wink*. And besides that sign, you will need a safeword, as usual to indicate things must stop immediately.

Just as a dominant needs to take care of the submissive, the owner will need to make sure their pet needs are attended. Keep their toys nearby and some treats you know they enjoy (like chocolate… who doesn’t love chocolate?). If you want, you can emulate some animal food, but I wouldn’t recommend actually feeding your pet with actual animal food. You also want to keep in mind kennels and cages and what are your pet’s limits. As usual, cramping is a real thing; so don’t leave them there too long! Woof!
