How to do Bondage Rope Art

Bondage is an art form. Knowing your way around the ropes, literally (he he) can be quite helpful when you are trying to spice things up in the bedroom. If you and your partner are interested in adding or trying a little bondage in their lives, there are some things you will need to take into account.

First and foremost, decide whom will be the one being tied up and whom will be the one doing the tying up. Once you decide the roles, you should always review the health related concerns that may arise from bondage (you can’t always be too prepared!). Another aspect is the certainty that both parties are agreeing and consent to this, as a way to have an enjoyable experience and to have fun. On the other hand, I will always recommend having a pair of scissors nearby when you are experimenting with bondage. And always check for any changes in the limb’s colors, as well as any other changes of sensation on them.

Afterwards, you will need to decide on more specific bondage related topics such as:

  • What rope will you be using. As you may know, there are different types of ropes out there. Nylon is durable and strong; it can nicely hold a knot. Polyester rope, like the kind that makes up marine rope, is also stiff. This makes it a good choice because it can also hold a knot. If you are looking for something more on the rough side of things (like I always say, why not?) sisal rope is always a good choice. Hemp and cotton ropes are also optimal for this because they are on the more abrasive side of things.
  • Deciding the size and length. Body harness, like the kinds that bound breasts, torso, pelvis, genial regions, as well as wrists and ankle cuffs are formed with ropes of 6 and 8mm. 25 feet for larger areas and 12.5 for cuffs. On the other hand, if you are more inclined to torture, you can use 3-4mm on the genitals or chest areas.
  • How will you bound? There are infinite ways to do role play and bondage play. You can do a harness and bound their torso, or could tie their limbs together. Maybe tie them to the bed or even hang them from the ceiling? Just keep in mind to choose an appropriate knot that goes with whatever way you are choosing to do the bondage.

Not sure about what kind of knot you should use? That’s what I’m here for, wink*:

  • Reef or square knot: This is a basic knot that works well when you are tying the ends of two ropes. It does not produce much pressure on the skin and is flat, what makes it my perfect choice for beginners on BDSM or people who are trying bondage for the first time.
  • French bowline knot: My favorite to be used on ankles and wrists. They don’t cut off circulation and is a fairly safe knot.
  • Cow hitch: It’s a weak knot and works well if you want to make a harness or want to tie up the torso. Now, they should not be used to tie around limbs or around a pole.
  • Clove/half hitch: They work great if you want to bind someone to a bed or post. They shouldn’t be used for suspension or as a harness, and also is not advisable for you to try them on wrists and ankles. The reason being they can cut off circulation really easy, so it’s best to be safe. On the good side, they are super easy to tie up, wink*.

Remember bondage can create or exacerbate some mental and psychological aspects, so it’s always a good idea to take some after care precautions. Don’t be afraid to talk about your experience and feelings after everything is done! It’s important for the couple to discuss how they felt during the experience and determine if they want to move forward with bondage play or if they want to leave it at that. Whatever path you take, the important thing will be the experience, wink*,
